Our basic needs

Thanksgiving week brings us face to face with family and relatives, dreams and expectations. Sometimes it brings us face to face with our past and sometimes even regrets. We tend to assess the people we’re around. We tend to judge people we know well.

It’s easier to make judgments about people than to try to understand and empathize. Maybe we recognize a bit of ourselves in the people we judge?

Instead of seeing people’s behavior, maybe we should look to see the attempts to meet basic human needs, which we all have in common. (Certainty, uncertainty, love, significance…)The shift of focus from behavior to needs will bring us to compassion and cause us to realize that the person we think is most different from us, is not.
